Mason Matthew Hoburg

March 30, 1936 ~ October 16, 2018 (age 82)

HOBURG, Mason Matthew, 82, died peacefully on October 16, 2018 after a year and a half battle with cancer. Mason was born in San Francisco, CA on March 30, 1936 to Frances (Andrieu) and Mason Alfred Hoburg and was a 46-year resident of Sonoma County. During and after WWII his family migrated to St. Helena where he went through school playing football, basketball, track and field. It was through these early years he started developing lifelong friendships. Mason graduated from University of the Pacific with degree in Finance. After graduation, Mason married his college sweetheart Joline Crook, and had twin girls, Jeaneen and Janice at the age of 21 with another daughter Mindy soon after. He lost his first wife, Joline, to cancer in 1992. Years later, Mason met and married Janalyn in 1998.

Over the years, Mason had many jobs in the finance industry, most recently self employed as a General Agent in the auto warranty industry. He was active in 20/30 club and IADAC. He was a passionate and avid fisherman. He was a regular participant in blackjack tournaments and was crowned Tournament Champion on several occasions. His other hobbies included duck hunting and football pools. He loved to BBQ chicken and made the best smoked salmon. Mason loved being outdoors spending time watching his koi fish swim in the beautiful pond he built for them; and watching his vegetable garden grow and flourish.

Mason is remembered for his enormous heart, abundant kindness, generosity, and devoted loyalty to his family and friends.   He loved being with family and friends- and everybody was a friend! His other 'family' were the customers and staff of Willie Birds Restaurant where you could find him in the same seat on many afternoons discussing sports and gifting his smile and fresh salmon to people when he had it to offer.

A little more than 5 years ago, Mason generously opened his home and heart to become a loving foster father to his young nephews, Stuart and Henry, and his niece, Catherine. He grudgingly allowed a dog, who quickly became his baby girl, Lillie.

He is survived by his loving wife, Janalyn; his daughters: Jeaneen (John) Oscamou, Janice George, and Mindy Hoburg; his grandchildren: Jason Constantine, Shauna (Matthew) Vizcarra, and Mason (Amanda) Oscamou; and his great grandchildren Sophia, Logan, Riley and Carter. He is also survived by his siblings, Larry (Colleen) Hoburg and Kathy Baddeley; and many dear friends to numerous to list.

Mason is preceded in death by his parents and first wife.

A private celebration of Mason’s life will be held at a later date. Inquiries can be made to Windsor Healdsburg Mortuary for details. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mason’s honor to the charity of the donor’s choice
