Steven Szczesniak was born and raised in Minnesota, making his appearance into this world on August 2, 1946. He passed away peacefully on January 31, 2019 at the age of 72 with family by his side. He was raised Catholic, serving as an alter boy in the church and attending a Catholic School for about 2 years. As he got older, his faith seemed to stay strong and he was never known to stray away from his faith. He last attended Spring Hills Church in Santa Rosa and enjoyed singing and lifting up his voice and hands in praise to God during worship time.
Steve lived his life with a passion and desire to love and care for others. In High School, he played hockey and loved the sport enough that he eventually coached others to play the sport. After finishing High School, he enrolled and joined the Air Force for 4 years, and had such a desire to serve and protect the people of our country, that he reenlisted full time with the National Guard years later. During his time in the Service, he always volunteered to serve and fight in war; though he never was given the opportunity. He finished out his career and retired from the military, happy for the time he had served, and could talk to people for hours telling stories about his time and experience in the military if they let him. His big heart and love extended beyond serving the people of this country to his God given family.
In 1983, he met his wife Joann who already had grown children and a grandchild. After much convincing, Joann finally agreed to date him and they married on December 23, 1984. While never having children of his own, he loved the children and grandchildren he inherited from his first and second marriage with such love that you wouldn’t believe they were not his own. He loved spending time with his wife and family, and would do just about anything to put a smile on their faces and get them to laugh.
Steve is survived by his mother Florence Szczesniak; his sister Luana and her spouse Kevin Fluegge; his sister Mary Jo and her spouse Bill Gabbert; his brother Josh and his spouse Marion Szczesniak; his brother Darwin Szczesniak; and his wife Joann Szczesniak. He is also survived by his God given and chosen family: daughter Susan and her spouse Fred Brouse; daughters Bianca Parton and Clarissa Rodriguez; son Darrell Handbury; and son John and his spouse Heidi Handbury; along with 12 grandchildren and their spouses; 12 great grandchildren with one married and another great grandchild on the way; and 1 great great grandchild with another on the way.
Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at Spring Hills Church, 3700 Fulton Road, Santa Rosa, CA 95403.
